On Sunday's Panache Peloton ride (19 Sep), the Stacey's Road hill claimed it's first mechanical victim – Robyn's chain broke under the strain of the hard push up the hill. Graeme did the noble thing and rode back home to fetch a chain breaker tool, but meanwhile Gadget got onto the job at hand. They say necessity is the mother of all invention. Maybe, but Gadget must be the father. Ever resourceful, he repaired the chain with only nature's abundant gifts (ok, and a tyre lever!). Our photos show Gadget reconnecting the pin with the chain link using two rocks. We were tempted (due to the cold wind) to hold some sticks near the rocks to start a fire to warm us up, but that proved unnecessary, as the job was completed in record time!

Barrie has decided to seek solace for the bitter disappointment of his beloved Cats losing the preliminary final and being eliminated from this year's premiership race, in some retail therapy. He has a new bike, complete with "Go Pies" banner (the bike shop threw this in for free!). Here is the first sneak peak of the bike – even before it has been taken on a ride. Note the absence of the traditional drive train – this new model has the
After an extended break in the warmer regions of our country, Eddie returned to fall victim to a nasty illness. This week, he finally made a welcome return to the peloton. Of course, we are wondering if the incident earlier in the week had anything to do with luring him out into the morning cold. In a virtual repeat of the infamous "pump throw" ride, Bad Dave suffered a severe case of equipment failure – his light shining about as brightly as an extinguished candle in the pre-dawn darkness, was dispatched into the roadside paddock with the same choice words as the earlier situation with the pump! Immediately, the peloton thought that the lure of adding to his equipment collection, might draw Eddie back to the peloton.
And so it was! On a cold and frosty morning, with most of us rugged up in 3 or more layers, scarves, balaclavas, booties and full finger gloves, our Eddie turned up in shorts and just a few layers of oil! For the rest of the peloton, it was like a -10 deg wind chill, to see Eddie in his shorts. But great to have you back! Hopefully, the rest of the peloton members will fully recover and rejoin the regular ranks again soon!
One of my good friends, a keen cyclist, is very lucky – his partner is also a keen cyclist. They go riding together, they train together, they follow cycling together – in short, they BOTH understand the need for each to go out for a ride.
Those of us whose partners are not keen cyclists face a dilemma every time we want to go out for a ride – we want to go out for an hour or two ride, that quickly becomes three, four or more as we ramp up the training. Add to that the coffee stop, the cycling related social catch ups, and quickly, our passion is seen as a threat to the relationship bliss!
Cycling Tips has posted guidelines to Negotiating a Leave Pass, which shows you how NOT to have your regular rides interfere with your relationship bliss! The videos provide a stark warning of what might happen if you get it wrong!
